We re-encode your photo and strip out location and device metadata. It's automatically screened, used to create and fulfill your puzzle, and stored securely. We never sell it. Photos of children may only be uploaded by a parent or legal guardian. Read the Privacy Policy.
A photo puzzle should do two things well: print your image faithfully and produce a finished object worth the time it took to assemble. Most photo puzzle services manage neither. Puzzably starts from a different question: what would make this worth framing when it is done?
The answer, at every step, is the same. Sharper printing. Tighter cutting. A frame-compatible finished size. Packaging that looks intentional on a shelf. These are not upgrades you pay extra for; they are how every Puzzably photo puzzle is made.
How it works
1. Upload your photo
Drag in a JPEG, PNG, WebP, or HEIC file, up to 25 MB, from any device. We accept high-resolution files from phones, cameras, and scanners. The upload tool shows you a preview and lets you confirm your crop before you proceed.
2. The studio checks it before you pay
Every image is checked for resolution at output size and shown cropped to the puzzle's shape before you pay. If your image is likely to print soft at the size you picked, that size is flagged before checkout. The design you approve is exactly the design we print.
3. Printed and precision cut
Your photo is printed at 200+ DPI print-validated and die-cut to precise tolerances. Pieces click firmly and stay seated, and the assembled puzzle lies flat.
4. Ships in giftable packaging
The finished puzzle travels in giftable packaging that never shows a price. It arrives in about 2 weeks, production included, with free US shipping. It arrives ready to give, ready to build, and ready to display when done.
Photo puzzle as a gift
Custom photo puzzles make memorable personalised gifts, for a reason that is easy to underestimate: they take time to engage with. A photo printed on a mug is glanced at. A photo puzzle is assembled over an evening, then kept. That longevity is why they land differently.
What makes a photo puzzle gift land even better is the quality of the object. When the tin looks deliberate and the pieces are satisfying to handle, the experience before the first piece goes down is already good. That is the gap Puzzably is built to fill.
Popular photo puzzle gifts:
- Family portraits. Multi-generational photos, holiday shots, reunion pictures. 252 pieces, a focused afternoon build, is our featured size for gifts; 500 pieces, the classic weekend build, is there for a bigger, slower project.
- Pet portraits. Dogs and cats especially. A well-lit pet photo, framed after assembly, becomes wall art that also tells a story about the animal.
- Travel photos. A meaningful landscape or city shot from a trip, assembled and framed at home, does what prints do without the cost of large-format printing.
- Milestone moments. Weddings, engagements, new home, first baby. The giftable packaging means no additional wrapping required.
- Couple photos. Anniversaries, Valentine's Day, birthday surprises. A photo you were both in, turned into something you build together.

At 500 pieces, the finished size (530x390mm) matches a standard 50x70cm frame, so if you want to mount the completed puzzle at that size you are not hunting for a custom frame.
Which size works for photos
Six sizes, from 30 to 2,000 pieces. Our default is 252 pieces at $54.99, a focused afternoon build at 14 x 11 in that keeps photographic detail clearly visible. 500 pieces ($69.99, 21 x 15.5 in) is the classic weekend build, with larger pieces that show portraits and close-up shots even more clearly. Either way, a puzzle that gets finished is the one that ends up framed on a wall.
Displaying your completed photo puzzle
The finished size is chosen to match standard frames. You can glue and frame the traditional way, or frame it without glue using a pressure fit. Every method is compared in how to frame a puzzle.
If you prefer not to display it at all, the collector tin stores the puzzle flat and makes a tidy shelf object in its own right.
Puzzably also produces original artist-designed puzzles in styles that work as wall art, including sunflowers, ocean scenes, and Paris streetscapes. These are designed first as display objects, second as puzzles, and are worth browsing if you want something for your own walls rather than a photo gift.
Our promise
Your photo is checked for resolution at full output size and shown cropped to the puzzle's shape before you pay. If the image will not hold up at the size you picked, that size is flagged before you pay, not after the tin arrives. You approve the exact design before checkout, and we print exactly that design.
Each puzzle is printed to order and cut to the piece count you choose. If a puzzle arrives damaged or misprinted, we reprint it free.
Frequently asked questions
What photo resolution do I need for a sharp result?
For a clean print at any size we offer, we recommend a source file of at least 1500px on the short edge. Smartphone photos taken in the last few years typically exceed this. We check resolution at print size before you pay and flag sizes the file cannot support.
Can I use a scanned photo or film image?
Yes. Scan at 600dpi or higher for a physical print, and as high as your scanner allows for film negatives and slides. Old scanned photos with grain or colour shift can still make excellent puzzles; the texture of an older image can add character to the assembled result.
Is the packaging suitable as a gift?
Yes. The packaging is designed to be given directly and never shows a price. You can add a personalised gift note at checkout; it travels digitally with the order confirmation email.
What if I am unhappy with the print quality?
If the printed image is materially different from what your uploaded file should produce, we reprint and reship at no cost. We ask for a photo of the defect. We cannot accept returns on made-to-order custom items, but print errors and production defects are always our responsibility.
Can I order a photo puzzle in bulk?
Yes, for events, corporate gifts, or family reunion orders. Contact us for bulk pricing; minimum quantities and lead times vary by order size.
How is a Puzzably photo puzzle different from a Walgreens or CVS photo puzzle?
Retail photo puzzles from pharmacy chains are optimised for same-day convenience and low price points. They typically print at lower resolutions and in smaller finished sizes. Puzzably's puzzles are a different product category: they are designed to be a kept object, not a same-day novelty. If speed and cost are the priority, pharmacy options have their place. If quality and longevity are the priority, Puzzably is built for that.
