We re-encode your photo and strip out location and device metadata. It's automatically screened, used to create and fulfill your puzzle, and stored securely. We never sell it. Photos of children may only be uploaded by a parent or legal guardian. Read the Privacy Policy.

You have the photo. We handle everything that turns it into a premium jigsaw puzzle worth keeping. Upload your image, and we make it a custom puzzle, in your choice of six sizes: a resolution check at actual print size, a crop preview, precision die-cutting, and shipping in giftable packaging.

The finished custom puzzle from your photo fits a standard frame and arrives looking like a kept object, not a rushed printout. If you want to give it as a gift or keep it as a display piece, it holds up to both. When it is done, it can be framed without glue.

How to make a custom puzzle from a photo

Step 1: Upload your photo

Upload a JPEG, PNG, WebP, or HEIC file, up to 25 MB, directly from your phone, computer, or cloud storage. Minimum recommended resolution is 1500px on the short edge; higher files print sharper at every size we offer.

Step 2: The studio checks it before you pay

Unlike services that auto-process uploads and hope for the best, Puzzably checks every image before you pay: resolution at the actual output size, and the crop, which you see as a preview. If the file will not hold up at the size you picked, that size is flagged before checkout. The design you approve is exactly the design we print.

Step 3: Printed and precision cut

Your photo goes to print at 200+ DPI print-validated, and die-cutting is calibrated so pieces click together firmly without forcing. The finished puzzle lies flat and lifts in sections, ready to frame.

Step 4: Shipped in giftable packaging

The completed puzzle ships in giftable packaging that never shows a price, ready to give or keep. It arrives in about 2 weeks, production included, with free US shipping.

What makes a great puzzle photo?

Not every image makes an equally satisfying puzzle. Here is what works best.

High contrast and varied colour. Puzzles with large areas of a single flat colour (a plain blue sky, a white wall) are genuinely harder to assemble and less satisfying to look at finished. Photos with tonal variety, texture, or multiple subjects give puzzlers something to work with in every section.

Sharpness at output size. A photo that looks fine on a phone screen may print soft at puzzle size. The pre-press check catches this, but the best outcome is always a sharp source file. If you are scanning a physical print, scan at 600dpi or higher.

Meaningful content. The best puzzle photos are ones you would be glad to frame when they are done: a landscape with real atmosphere, a portrait that captures an expression, a travel photo with layers of detail. Puzzle assembly takes time, so the image rewards attention.

Faces and group photos. These work extremely well. The familiarity of the faces makes assembly more rewarding, not less.

A custom puzzle from your photo vs a ready-made design

If you have the right photo, a custom puzzle from your image is personal in a way no catalog design can match. A photo from a wedding, a trip, a pet, a childhood memory brings context that a stranger's art cannot carry.

If you want something with an art-object quality and you are open to a design that is not your own photo, browse the Puzzably catalog. Original artist designs in styles like watercolor, oil painting, and minimalist are made to display. Some customers order both: one custom photo puzzle as a gift, and one catalog design for their own shelf.

Photo puzzle gift ideas

A custom photo puzzle from Puzzably travels well as a gift. Here are the requests we see most often.

Family photos. Multi-generation portraits, holiday gatherings, new baby shots. 252 pieces, a focused afternoon build, is our featured size for family gifts; 500 pieces, the classic weekend build, suits a bigger group that wants to share the assembly.

Pet photos. Dogs, cats, horses. A pet photo puzzle makes a thoughtful, personal gift. Use a high-contrast shot with good background separation for the sharpest result.

Travel and landscape. A meaningful travel photo, framed after assembly, becomes a piece of wall art that also tells a story.

Couples and milestones. Anniversaries, engagements, and first-home photos. The packaging makes a clean gift presentation with no additional wrapping needed, and it never shows a price.

Our promise

Your photo is checked for resolution at full output size and shown cropped to the puzzle's shape before you pay. If the image will not hold up at the size you picked, that size is flagged before you pay, not after the tin arrives. You approve the exact design before checkout, and we print exactly that design.

Each puzzle is printed to order and cut to the piece count you choose. If a puzzle arrives damaged or misprinted, we reprint it free.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum photo resolution I need?

We recommend at least 1500px on the short edge for a result that prints cleanly at any size we offer. Larger files give sharper output. We check resolution at print size before you pay and flag sizes the file cannot support.

Can I submit a photo I took on my phone?

Yes. Modern smartphones capture more than enough resolution for a sharp print, provided the photo is in focus and reasonably well lit. Low-light or heavily blurred photos will not improve in the pre-press process; start with the sharpest version you have.

Can I crop or reposition the image before it prints?

Yes. The upload tool lets you adjust crop and zoom before placing your order. Keep adjusting until the preview looks right: the design you approve at checkout is exactly what prints.

What happens if my photo does not meet the quality threshold?

The studio flags it before you check out, with the specific issue and options: supply a higher-resolution file, adjust the crop to a sharper area of the image, or choose a different photo. We do not let a file we know will look bad reach print.

Can I make more than one copy of the same puzzle?

Yes. Add more than one puzzle to your cart in the same order and the per-unit price drops automatically: $4 off each puzzle when you order 2, $7 off each at 3 or more.

How is this different from Shutterfly or a drugstore photo puzzle?

The main differences are print quality, cut precision, and how the finished object is designed to be used. Drugstore and big-box photo puzzles are optimised for low cost and fast turnaround. Puzzably is optimised for the result looking and feeling like something you want to keep. The automated pre-press check, precise cut, frame-compatible size, and giftable packaging are all part of that. See our comparison pages for a side-by-side breakdown.
